We will review progress on GaN-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). A key challenge in GaN-based VCSELs is forming lattice matched distributed Bragg refelectors (DBRs). We will highlight an approach to DBRs that uses nanoporous GaN and present recent performance of electrically injected GaN-based VCSELs.
