D-PO03-115 - Effect Of Hepatitis C Viral Load On Atrial Fibrillation/Flutter (ID 328)


Background: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease including cardiac arrhythmias. Previous studies have shown an increased risk of arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation; even in acute HCV infections and was associated with increased all-cause mortality
Objective: We sought to study the association between HCV viral load (VL) and risk of atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) at 30 days after the index HCV admission in a retrospective fashion
Methods: Study population data was gathered from the Cerner Health Facts national database. We identified 25707 encounters for 14,590 patients who had VL testing across 106 hospitals between 2010 and 2018. HCV VL was defined as high (>800,000 IU/ml) and low (< 800,000 IU/mL). We included both demographics (age, race, gender) and comorbidities (diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), HIV, chronic kidney disease (CKD), smoking Status, hyperlipidemia (HLD), obesity, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea(OSA), and heart failure (HF) as covariates in the multivariate regression model
Results: There was no statistically significant association found between HCV VL level and the occurrence of AF/AFL at day 30. However, when compared to low VL, patients in high VL groups were noted to have increased incidence of AF/AFL with increasing age, white race, HTN, CKD, obesity, and HF. Surprisingly female sex and HIV status were associated with low risk of AF/AFL in the high VL group. (Table)
Conclusion: In our study, HCV VL was not found to be associated with the risk of AF/AFL at day 30 from index admission. Further studies are needed to explore this in a prospective fashion.
