Abstract

There is an increasing need for emphasis on cultural competency training in pre-clinical years of medical schools. In order to produce more culturally competent student physicians, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) at the Old Westbury campus has implemented a new cultural competency curriculum and workshop program in the 2018-2019 academic year for pre-clinical medical students. To evaluate the effectiveness of the new curriculum, we collected data on student's attitudes using validated questionnaires measuring levels of cultural competency before and after receiving the cultural competency training in order to quantify the change in student's attitudes and identify factors influencing the individual and various groups’ the questionnaire scores. We anticipate that building this data will help strengthen cultural competency curriculum and training methodology in medical schools.
