Abstract

In recent years there has been a decline in the number of physicians entering academic medicine, and retention among those already involved in this area is problematic. Efforts must be taken to increase the percentage of physicians who pursue careers in academic medicine. Recognizing this need, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) established the Academic Medicine Scholars Program (“Scholars Program”), a five year program resulting in Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) and Master of Neuromusculoskeletal Science (MS) degrees. NYITCOM students accepted into the program are trained in research skills, verbal and written communication skills, adult learning theory and effective teaching skills, grant writing, and the process of publishing research in peer review journals. In this session, we will discuss the design of the The Scholars Program, and how it has proven to prepare outstanding osteopathic medical students for a career in academic medicine.
