Abstract

In this session, attendees will be introduced to the Underserved Youth Medical School Outreach Program (UYMSOP). Our goal is to share our ideas with collogues who are interested in reaching out to youth in underserved communities.
The UYMSOP was designed by two OMS-IIs at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine - Colorado (RVU-CO) who were public school educators prior to starting medical school. The curriculum created gives children in underserved communities an opportunity to come to RVU-CO where they engage in an educational and enjoyable day experiencing medicine through their own lenses.
This curriculum allows children, who are less likely than their more affluent peers to have a personal tie to someone in medicine, to experience the ins and outs of getting accepted to medical school, what life in medical school is like, and what a career in medicine offers.
Our aim as former educators and current medical students is to provide all children, regardless of the zip code where they were born, their ethnicity, or their family’s economic status, an opportunity to find out if medicine is right for them, and to establish local contacts to help them along their journey if they choose to pursue medicine.
