In 2016, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) Medical Student Mental Health Committee (MSMHC) in collaboration with the Office of Personal Counseling and Health Promotion designed and then implemented an anonymous Medical Student Mental Health Survey. This survey was completed by the MSUCOM student body. The survey was initially administered to gain insight into the needs of the medical students and to create mental health awareness throughout the college. The study was designed to gain information in order to structure programs aimed at addressing our medical students’ wellness needs. The survey is composed of multiple questions that elicit information regarding the psychological wellbeing of our students. Approximately 1200 students were eligible to complete the survey each year (2016-2019). This project was approved by the Michigan State University’s Institutional Review Board and has accumulated four years of data on wellbeing of MSUCOM students throughout their curriculum. The data from the survey identify vulnerable time periods and show patterns of stressor symptoms (depression, anxiety, sleep and eating problems, and burnout) over four years of medical training.
