Abstract

Medical Schools around the country are grappling with how best to address the mental health and well-being of medical students. The stressors of medical school, residency and physician practice combined with a fear or hesitancy of asking for help or seeking guidance and assistance can lead to physician burnout and a stigmatization of mental illness amongst those that view themselves as “healers.” Many osteopathic medical schools are looking for innovative ways to talk about mental health, end the stigma, create awareness and inspire hope. NYITCOM has launched a Center for Behavioral Health to focus on the mental health needs and challenges of students in the health profession. Our center aims to use education, research, treatment and prevention to offer treatment and hope and promote a culture of mental health and well-being within our community.
