Abstract

In a normal business environment, academic institutions, particularly in the health care arena, face many uncertainties around technological changes, emerging business models, regulations, and students’ and patients’ needs and demands. And we are now in March 2020, with “unusual uncertainty” in the words of the former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. Leaders must recognize that with these uncertainties, they can no longer accurately predict the future when building organizational plans, but rather must be willing to make decisions and then adapt as they implement. The ability to be agile is critical to the long-term success of institutions and leaders must build these skills. This session explores the business case for agility, provides leadership behaviors to encourage agility, and provides conditions for building a culture of agility.
