Access to treatment for opioid addiction is critical to fighting the epidemic. In this session, participants will be introduced to the PCSS Medical Students Waiver Training Course. This course was developed by NC’s Governor's Institute with SAMHSA funding, in collaboration with SAMHSA support of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry’s Provider Clinical Support System and the Coalition on Physician Education in Substance Use Disorders (COPE). It is available free to all medical schools and provides students the training needed to gain certification to provide Medication for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD) under supervision. This workshop will result in schools considering adoption of the PCSS Medical Student Waiver Training Course, increasing the number of MOUD providers. In addition, the workshop will highlight the need for curriculum change in medical schools in training the next generation of physicians in understanding issues in OUD and all SUDs in the light of current efforts underway in the federal government to abolish the Waiver.
