In this session, participants will learn how to organize an interactive exercise that allows students to integrate Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory testing into preclinical education. Pathology is a core preclinical course essential to understanding the basis of medicine. In an effort to increase correlation between basic pathologic science and clinical application, an interactive CLIA waived laboratory exercise was designed and implemented at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) - Carolinas Campus. This two hour exercise utilizes small group discussion, hands-on testing, and instructor-led lecture materials to cover four basic CLIA waived laboratory tests. Students are encouraged to recognize the utility and limitation of CLIA waived laboratory tests, ask questions about their application, consider patient cost and test availability, and apply findings to case scenarios. After implementation with osteopathic medical students in their second preclinical year, this novel laboratory format proved successful in linking basic science to clinical concepts and was well received.
