Abstract

This 30-minute lecture will examine the cognitive framework physicians employ for the development of clinical reasoning skills and communication in the context of SOAP notes. Undergraduate medical education programs are an optimal setting for teaching students how to develop these competencies, and serve to increase students’ mastery of appropriate patient-doctor and doctor-health team communication. The presenters will describe the NBOME’s commitment to continued assessment of SOAP Note construction as a means of assessing how students receive, interpret and communicate patient information in written format.
