Abstract

In this poster, we aim to examine patient understanding of menopause and perimenopause via a 14-item assessment and 2 items related to preferred method of health education. The questionnaire was distributed to female patients at the FMS Clinic at Valley Hospital. The participant performance constituted our primary outcome, with statistical analysis conducted using two-sample ttests. The research is in progress, and we will have a more comprehensive analysis in the future. We documented deficits in patient knowledge with a mean score of 67.9%. Statistically significant lower scores were associated with having no children and Hispanic/Latino origin. The deficits we identified indicate the need to improve women’s health literacy. The most common method for learning about menopause was from family (59.4%), while the most common method that women would prefer to learn about menopause was from their physician or healthcare provider (71.9%). It is important to improve the method of education so that we can ensure women are receiving accurate information and having their questions and concerns addressed by a knowledgeable provider. By understanding where women are lacking proper education, we can help improve the understanding of menopause and perimenopause and clarify many of the myths associated with menopause.
